How to Celebrate National Just Because Day
Drop the façade of mild-mannered normalcy and allow yourself to indulge a few of your wilder urges today. Why? Just because.
Leave the second button of your shirt unbuttoned. Forgo sunscreen. Mismatch your socks. Drink milk directly from the carton. Order the large fries. Why? Just because.
Add fabric softener to the wash. Don’t clean out the lint trap. Push the washer and dryer against the laundry-room door. Barricade the windows. Why? Just because.
Climb into the dryer. Close the dryer door. Wait in the darkness until you feel safe. (As long as it takes.) Why? Just because.
Open the dryer door. Discover that your laundry room has been emptied of everything except the dryer – which you’ve come to think of as your home – a single, bare light bulb hanging from the ceiling, and an old stone pedestal with a shiny red button resting atop it. Eye the button suspiciously. Why? Just because.
Exit the dryer. Search the room for any means of escape. Consider living the rest of your life inside the dryer. Reconsider. Approach the pedestal.
Realize the life you’ve been living these last few days has been a lie. That dog didn’t look at you; you aren’t old enough to remember the original airing of The Banana Splits or its reruns; you’re more than familiar with the proclivities of the Furry community; you don’t even like waffles – you’ve always preferred pancakes.
Whisper a quiet prayer that this time the button will take you home.
Press the button.
Why? Just because.
Throughout the month of August, we’ve connected several of our National Days posts with a light narrative. Today’s post picks up where National Waffle Day left off and is the tenth entry in the series.
Previous entries, in order, were:
- National Fresh Breath Day
- World Lighthouse Day
- National Book Lovers Day
- National Garage Sale Day
- National Creamsicle Day
- World Photo Day
- National Radio Day
- National Sponge Cake Day
- National Waffle Day
Every post through the end of the month will be a narrative post, and will complete the story. What will happen next? Will we ever see the lighthouse keeper again? Stay tuned to find out.
